Everyone who is responsible for a property that has any gas appliances should take gas safety very seriously. It isn't necessarily a question of being fanatical about saving energy (although, we should all do our bit), it is just making sure that all of your gas appliances (boiler, cooker, fires) are checked once a year.
Well, it isn't actually enough to just have them checked, they need to be checked by someone who you are sure knows what they are doing. This means Gas Safe engineers, someone who has proven to other experts that they are competant to carry out work that will be safe. The Gas Safe Register is there so you know who is qualified to work on gas appliances. Anyone who works on gas appliances must have an official identity card and must show you when you ask to see it.
Cowboy heating engineers, who are not Gas Safe registered or accredited, are responsible for a number of serious accidents and even deaths. It isn't just the fact that your boiler or cooker could explode if someone who doesn't know what they are doing tampers with it. When gas doesn't burn properly, one of the results is Carbon Monoxide, a deadly poisonous gas that is invisible and has no noticeable smell. Gas Safe registered heating engineers are competant to work on your gas appliance and ensure that there is no danger of carbon monoxide poisoning. |

Many people remember Corgi, the previous organisation who were responsible for maintaining high standards among heating engineers who work with gas. Corgi has now been replaced by the Gas Safe register as the place to go to check that your heating engineer is qualified to do the work you are paying them for. Obviously, at Cooks Heating & Plumbing all of our heating engineers are Gas Safe registered. This involves not only training and examinations to prove that our people know what they are doing, but it involves regular 'refresher' courses to stay up to date with changes in industry standards and evolving technologies. Working on gas appliances without a Gas Safe accreditation is against the law.

As well as Gas Safe registration, Cooks Heating and Plumbing are OFTEC registered. This is the Oil Fired Technical Association, the equivalent of Gas Safe for oil burning appliances. Like the Gas Safe registed, OFTEC are recognised by the Government, as well as the oil industry, and manufacturers of heating appliances and oil tanks. This means that if you need someone who can safely work with highly flammable liquids, then OFTEC qualified heating engineers are the only people competant.
Part of this is the ability to 'self-certify' their work, meaning that throughout England and Wales, OFTEC registered heating engineers can carry out work on oil fired appliances without the need to have the work checked by the building control department of your local authority.
